Portman Children’s Centre

AHSD worked on the refurbishment of Portman Chilren’s Centre in Westminster, which involved the construction of a new two storey steel-framed extension to the rear.

It also included a re-configuration at ground floor and a staircase and lift extension to the roof level to provide an additional fire escape route.

The Design

The existing art deco building dates from the 1950s and comprised a concrete encased steel frame with hollow pot floors.

Several existing load-bearing masonry walls were removed to create a more open plan entrance area requiring carefully detailed steel work to re-support the first floor. The project was completed in the middle of 2021.
